Isoitok Maasai Permanent Tented Camp – Manyara
Esilalei Isoitok Maasai Tented Camp (isoitok meaning many stones in Kimaasai, the language of the Maasai) has a short history and story behind it which makes it very special in itself and if you, the intrepid traveller are to venture our way and would like to understand and take a look behind the scenes in Maasai culture then a night or two at Isoitok is a must.
This is no ordinary 5 star camp with endless Jacuzzi swimming pools but instead it offers a grass-roots cultural experience into Maasai culture.
Enjoy the vistas that fall away before you toward The Great Rift Valley Wall and Lake Manyara N.P, no noise pollution present other than the majestic mellow tone of the Maasai cow bells, whistle and hoops from the Laoyan (young Maasai) as they lead their livestock to the hills in search of better grazing.
A wild bush camp blended in its natural surroundings with as few changes as possible to mother nature apart from manicuring it and creating suitable shady areas for both the mobile fly-camping tents as well as our three permanent tents, each measuring 8 x 4 meters, fully furnished and offering private toilets and washing basins.
In addition to this we have also added a permanent mess/bar tent that offers views through the bush across to the Great Rift Valley wall that towers above Lake Manyara National Park – we can assure you it makes for a great sundowner spot.
Due to water having to be brought in by ourselves and the fact that at any one time the camp can only accommodate 4 guests, ensuring your privacy at all times, we have confined the shower and flushing toilet to a central open air amenities block.
We apologize in advance if this is an inconvenience to you in anyway, but hope you can appreciate the dryness of the land and the value of every drop of water.
Rest assured however since in each tent we do have sinks for splashing ones face and cleaning of teeth and chemical toilets with battery powered water pumps so we feel all areas are covered in order for you to enjoy your true cultural bush experience without having to rough it.
The camp is unique in regards to its relationship and location with the Maasai of Esilalei, Bush 2 Beach along with its own foundation African Roots Foundation (ARF) have been in partnership with the Maasai since 2007. As our relationship grew with the Maasai we slowly developed sustainable cultural tourism programs that would intern be an added value and very real experience for those who chose to travel with Bush2Beach.
The positive feed back from clients was never-ending with what we were doing out there and that the experiences of being able to roam freely amongst the Maasai and learn about their beliefs, traditions and rituals in a relaxed impersonal manner is the key factor we believe with any cultural encounters and experiences.
Only 21 km from Lake Manyara National Park and 60kms from Tarangire National Park make it an ideal base to head out for game drives to both parks along with true grass-roots cultural experiences that will come to you daily by simple staying amongst the Maasai people and witnessing their daily lives; what you see is not put on just for passing tourists.
