Wildlife, stunning landscapes and beach in 10 days; great game viewing, lush scenery & luxury lodges at budget prices.

“Luxury Lodges at Budget prices in a green and lush Tanzania”

As every guide-book about Tanzania will tell you, in the months of April and May we are experiencing our long rains. With every passing season however, this seems to change and one can never tell as to when the heavens are really going to open (or not).
The beauty with Tanzania; the sun is never too far away and will usually burn off the cloud cover at some stage of the day to bring the bush back to zinging life and richness.

All of this means the months of April and May are still excellent periods to visit and to give you some excitement, Bush2Beach Safaris have put together an excellent low season special offering amazing value for money.

Stay in luxury lodges for budget prices, the parks of the Northern Circuit are far quieter than during peak and high seasons and the game viewing is excellent still with many resident wildlife and birdlife being undisturbed by the rains.

Great game viewing, lush scenery and to top it all off we have combined the wildlife safari with time out on the beach to sit back and soak it all in before heading back to your home countries in time to plan for your next vacation.

Back in 1996 I was living in Tasmania the forgotten state of Australia’s mainland. Prior to actually living in Tazzie I had travelled there with a girl friend and undertaken many of the great outdoors treks and hikes that this island has to offer. As somebody who has trekked/tramped/hiked his way around the globe I was no stranger to extreme bush walking, and Tazzie certainly holds some pretty amazing wilderness locations for the keen bush-walker to disappear into. Surfacing a week or two later with the odd possum and wallaby as your only company on some of the more deserted treks and trails.

I was first introduced, or rather heard of an Ozzy guy who was involved in a climbing accident in Hinchinbrook Island up in Queensland. I had not long been in Tasmania when through friends I learned that this individual was coming to tackle one of the main Icon’s of Tazzie being Cradle Mountain. I had tackled this climb some years before and knew what it held in terms of rocky terrain, terrible weather and steep climbs once leaving the lake behind. Now Warren MacDonald had only been out of hospital for 10 months after he had both badly damaged legs amputated above the knee! As Warrens first name sake and trade name stated ‘Part Animal – Part Machine’, he was not going to sit in a wheel chair feeling sorry for himself and decided to return to the wild country for a reality check and make sure that his accident was not going to stop his passion of being surrounded by nature at its purest.

He had first considered tackling the trek in his super light weight wheel chair but it was soon evident, as he tilted out of this after only a couple of 100metres that this was not going to work!! Not perturbed, Warren completed the Cradle mountain climb in a sort of forward motion, push up where he propelled his lower torso forward to do it over and over again until he reached the summit of Cradle Mountain!!

My time to meet him came some time later when I was well settled in Tasmania, I was invited to join with his original team of friends for his next challenge which is known amongst the toughest bush walks in Australia – Federation Peak. Fast forwarding the whole climb, I and 4 others hiked in through crazy terrain, climbing for hours in wet weather on horizontal Tee tree bushes, to meet up with Warren who had already been on the go for 13 days when we finally met up with him, coming from the other direction. It was time for one party of friends to leave and bid Warren all the best and for our small party to join the remaining team in encouraging him along the way and ensuring he stood the best chances of summiting the peak.

Disability climbs and how Chris Pilley of Bush2Beach got involved

It was during my days with Warren that something changed in me forever. I had always been out there in the wilds during my backpacker days and undertook many tramps through New Zealand on my own just soaking in the wilderness and solitude, I seemed to enjoy so much. The more extreme and remote it got the more I enjoyed it. Not sure what the change was after meeting Warren but to be with someone who has a physical disability gives you another focus whilst plodding along the path. A rock or tree root for you is a hop, skip and a jump where as for Warren this meant throwing forward his crouches and pulling his body over any obstacle that was basically at knee height for any able bodied person. The determination, focus and inner strength is an all inspiring energy to be around and one’s own personal goals and achievements become secondary, safety and well being your primary goal with continuous encouragement and support taking over all other importance.

My time with Warren was short during this first climb but it paved the way to some remote idea he had as to tackling something harder and higher to which the focus became ‘Kilimanjaro’.

Armless and legless on the mountain…

This was what brought me through to East Africa back in 2000 and on my way, with a few side tracks I ended up tackling Mount Kenya, Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second highest peak followed by Mt Kilimanjaro. With eyes wide open I took in Umbwe route later cutting up Arrow Glacier scanning the track ahead In order to understand the terrain and difficulties that Warren perhaps would face.
Compared to Tazzie, the only one I could see was altitude and distances between the designated camps along the trail. Warren could travel around a 3rd of the distance in a giving day as what is standard for a climb of Kilimanjaro. The climb eventually came off in 2003 and by then we had teamed up with a Tanzania lad born without arms called Hamisi Lugunda. Hamisi was 19 years old at the time and had a passion for climbing Kilimanjaro. Through an Australian run gold mine he was sponsored and joined our little team over the 18 days up and 3 day down climb. For both climbers there were difficulties along the way but they overcame such hurdles as I’m sure they do in normal daily life without complaint and moved steadily up the route and finally to the summit. Both accomplished this amazing feat without assistance, for sure the B2B Kili Crew were there with food and camp set up but as for helping these determined individuals they did it largely on their own and to this day I still re-live my time out there side by side with Warren and Hamisi and as far as one of life’s greatest experiences it has to be up there amongst the top.

A second climb later came to the offices of B2B when a French film company heard of our involvement in Warrens climb. After 3 months of reckying some remote back country bush we had finally established a route for a hand-picked group of individuals all with physical disabilities. ‘Destination Afrika’ was the name of the reality TV series that was to become of all this hard work in choosing a suitable, although challenging route for the participants. Again although different and not as personal as Warrens climb the hurdles and emotional internal battles that faced these brave people is still very present and reflected on by those who were closely involved over the 3 week shoot.

To conclude this chapter on not so much climbing with disabilities but travelling with disabilities to countries such as East Africa, one should not be put off!! For sure we have a long way to go to come up to speed with wheel chair ramps to every hotel/lodge along the way but I’m sure however and have seen through my own eyes how the Tanzanians welcome all visitors. Your experience of travelling will be a warmly received one and if you fancy a challenge or two, then everything is possible and nothing really is out of your reach.

The experience of safari can free one’s mind body and soul – take that first step and leave the rest to us.

A fantastic safari guide who knew exactly where to find the animals & not only did we get to see the wonderful big 5 we saw it about 3 times! We could stay & watch the animals for hours he never hurried us to move on to the next thing, it was all at our pace which was brilliant. A chef travelled with us & cooked the most amazing food we have ever had on holiday.

They arranged absolutely everything & all we had to do was turn up & sit back & enjoy. We booked this trip to celebrate my 40th birthday as I wanted to do something special & it certainly didn’t disappoint.

Their tented camps are absolutely amazing, I wanted to live there!

I would highly recommend Bush 2 Beach & when we do this holiday again they are our first choice…

The Honemoon Trail takes you to a few of the most famous parks in the Northern circuit of Tanzania. All accommodation is in very comfortable permanent tented camps and lodges, most of them are low volume and not the big chain hotels. You’ll be having your own private safari vehicle and B2B driver during the whole trip.

In Zanzibar you’ll be staying at the Asali Suite of Matemwe Beach Village – a suite specially designed for honeymoons with your own private butler. Private dining at the veranda of your suite or in the restaurant – it’s your choice!

Roaming the jungles of Africa, was truly a dream come true for me. Doing it on our honeymoon, was icing on the cake and Bush2Beach made it happen!
February, the masses of the Great Migration are in the Ndutu area of the Serengeti National Park. This is your last chance to book your front-row seat!

“The Great Migration has started”

The Great Migration has started – book now to reserve some of the last accommodation in the middle of the moving masses. February is not too far away in the scheme of things and a lot of accommodation is already full. January, February and early March are prime game viewing in the Ndutu area bordering the famous Serengeti plains. This is where the action takes place with thousands upon thousands of Wildebeest massing on the open plains for breeding.

We have put together an exciting photographic safari that covers ‘The best of the Northern safari circuit’.

Visit Lake Manyara as a subtle introduction to Tanzania’s fine National Park with much resident wildlife, excellent birding and a healthy population of primates, finish off the day with song and dance and grass roots cultural experiences with an overnight stop amongst the Maasai of Esilalei. Sit back in the comforts of the tented bush camp overlooking Lake Manyara to melting sunsets.

We then take you off the beaten track following The Great Rift Valley wall through an ancient volcanic landscape to Lake Natron the breeding grounds of the lesser east African Flamingo, all in the shadows of Oldoinyo Lengai – The Mountain of the Gods. Natron allows for one to immerse in the wilderness location with relaxed walks, lake visits and the most invigorating power shower possible by visiting the series of waterfalls close by. Next stop Serengeti bound entering the very north of the eco system, one overnight stop to explore the local area then dropping into the heart of Serengeti to conduct game drives at your leisure, wildlife viewing will be extreme and the camps and lodges selected varying, comfortable and welcoming after your time spent out during game viewing.

Next but last stop is Ndutu itself, located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Already you would have come across the great migration whilst travelling through Serengeti but the biggest concentration of wildebeest will be in and around Ndutu, Lake Masek. Accommodation is limited but we do have certain nights available to date at a comfortable seasonal tented camp which will be in the centre of the action, do not miss this opportunity to be amongst it for several days roaming freely with your driver guide.

When you thought the action could not get any better we have added in an exciting private semi lux fly camp for you close to the Ngorongoro crater itself. Two nights will be spent at this private special camp location taking in the famous Ngorongoro crater in one day of full game drives of the crater floor followed by a guided crater rim walk and a seldom side trip by vehicle to visit Empakai crater. Here you will drop by foot with a NCAA ranger to the lake shore cutting through lush wild forests, Empakai being part of the ancient chain of volcanoes that make up the Crater highlands walking safari leading through to Lake Natron.

Return to Arusha with your final hours spent at the relaxing Lake Duluti before continuing through to JRO (Kilimanjaro International Airport) to connect with international flights.

Wishing to tackle Mt. Kilimanjaro's dizzying heights of 5895m? We offer several routes, experienced guides and top-class equipment

“Free your mind, body and soul as you head to the roof top of Africa…
the enormity of it all is breath-taking….”

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, reaching a height of 5,895 meters or 19,341 foot above sea level. On clear days her snow capped peaks can be seen from different vantage points from Arusha and Moshi.

For those wishing to tackle Mt Kilimanjaro’s dizzying heights there are several options open with each route having a different character; suitable in accordance to age, fitness level, prior experience as to climbing & trekking in general and at altitude, and – at the end of the day – just what you would like to experience out of your climb of Mount Kilimanjaro.

From personal experience and from those climbers who have stepped forth and tried, the overall feeling is that it is one of the hardest, most satisfying personal quest that most have attempted in their lives.

Whether reaching the summit or not, the journey that you will undertake will certainly be physical and emotional; the key to summiting Kilimanjaro being a strong positive focused mental attitude, good friends, a loved one and of course your experienced Bush2Beach Kili-Crew literally right behind you every step, shuffle, slip, slide of the way.

Getting ready to climb

Each route is described below in brief along with full day to day itineraries of how the climb will unfold; no matter which route you choose though, the aim is to succesfully make it to the roof-top of Africa. To maximize your chances, preparation is essential.

Equipment and clothing

An essential part of making it to the top is to arrive prepared, with the right clothing and medical items. To help you do this, we have put together a page listing the items to pack and pointers for a successful climb. Please contact us with any inquiries and questions concerning these; most items are also available for rent.

In the few days before commencing your climb you get to meet your guide(s) who will go through a thorough gear check and climbing safety brief at our offices or the hotel/lodge. This will allow you to ask all unanswered questions, fears and doubts before commencing the climb so that when you do actually put a toe at the park gate all uncertainty will be stored somewhere in the back of your thoughts allowing only positive feelings and a familiarization toward your guide who is going to become your best friend over the next 7 – 9 days.

It is an important factor to have trust and confidence in your guide as when the going gets tough he will be the best person to lean on (literally).

Acclimatisation

If you are considering a climb-only option then we recommend that you try and allow at least 2 days before heading up the mountain to settle in and slowly begin the acclimatization process; staying in Arusha – set at the base of Mount Meru (Tanzania’s second highest mountain at 4566m), at an altitude of around 1450 meters depending where you lay your head, allows for this.

We can also arrange an acclimatization / cultural trek in the foot hills of Mount Meru, allowing you to reach heights of close to 2000 metres and further forming a relationship with your guide who will do his upmost and foremost to deliver you safely to ‘The roof-top of Africa’, the highest free standing mountain in the world.

If you are looking to combine your climb of Mount Kilimanjaro with Tanzania’s wild-life and cultural insights during your time spent in our country we recommend that you head out on safari first as this offers several benefits.

You will slowly begin to adjust to altitude as already mentioned; by visiting the Ngorongoro Crater you reach heights of 2300 metres above sea level. In light of a request to head out on a Wildlife safari combined with a Kilimanjaro climb we will design the safari accordingly, spending a night on the Ngorongoro Crater rim and, depending on the way the itinerary works, possibly walk or trek in either direction arriving or leaving the Ngorongoro rim itself.

The Ngorongoro forest walk is fairly strenuous if heading up hill out of Karatu highlands but will put you in good step for what awaits on Kilimanjaro along with it being an exciting walk in itself with great opportunities to come across many forest dwellers, including elephant, buffalo and once reaching the higher open plains then Zebra and other plains games wildlife are common, making it a unique experience to be on ground level as opposed to the constraints of a safari vehicle.

Climbing Kilimanjaro

5/6 day Marangu Route - The only route up the Kilimanjaro were you‘ll sleep in Mountain huts instead of tents, can be done in 5 days but we advise using an extra altitude day which can be a major factor in your summit bid becoming successful. (more …)

6/7 day Machame Route – Our most popular trek, Machame has undoubtedly pulled perhaps the more adventurous climbers away from the popular Marangu route (more …)

6/7 day Umbwe Route - A route that holds the note as being the steepest route on Kilimanjaro!! Dramatic scenery on this route for the more adventurous groups, extreme bush walker who likes a challenge (more…)

6/7 day Rongai Route -

8 day Lemosho Route - Certainly the most relaxed, scenic and uncluttered open routes that Kilimanjaro has to offer, several days again heading up through afromontane forests of the lower slopes breaking out into open vista of Shira Plateau. (more …)
