My girlfriend and I recently completed a two week vacation in Africa, and Tanzania was the perfect destination for us. For me, the opportunity to safari in Serengeti National Park was a dream come true and the beaches on the island of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean was a major attraction for my girlfriend, needless to say, we fully enjoyed the entire trip, but the Serengeti National Park was the most memorable for both of us.

I started the process of planning the safari by emailing about ten companies and stating the places we would like to go and our budget. Bush 2 Beach quickly stood out from the competition with fast replies to email that showed passion for the safari experience and the sincere desire to ensure their clients have the best experience possible. After about 30 emails back and forth with Bush 2 Beach, we had an itinerary that my girlfriend and I felt was perfect for us. I believe it is safe to say there is not another safari company around the Serengeti that is so genuinely interested in going though all the details involved in planning a safari that will meet the experience you envision. I am very pleased to say that my satisfaction with Bush 2 Beach continued through the planning stages all the way until we were returned to our hotel in Arusha at the end of the safari.

The first destination on safari was Lake Manyara National Park where we saw a good variety of animals and the views were great with the lake on one side and the Great Rift Valley Wall on the other. Lake Manyara ended up being the best place for us for watching elephants and watching large group of elephants cool off in a watering hole was the highlight. We also did a night safari in the national park, operated by the park, and that was a worthwhile experience as we saw some animals that are only out at night and the park has a different feel at night where everything is lit up by the moon and your vehicle is the only one driving around the park. On the first day, we stayed overnight at the Massai Community of Esilalei, which is close to the park. This provided us with an experience with the Massai that far exceeded my expectations. Here, we participated in traditional song and dance and was shown around the village and even inside a home or a boma. Hiking up a hill that overlooks the Massai land early the next morning with a Massai Medicine Man who was teaching us their uses for different plants was a very memorable experience and the view was great.

On the second day of the safari, we drove through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area en route to the Serengeti. We had our first view of the Ngorongoro Crater on the way and saw many Massai going about their daily lives. The drive through the conservation area provided some great opportunities to see giraffes. In the afternoon we made into Serengeti National Park and the quantity of animals was just amazing. We ended the day at the Serona campsite with a beautiful sunset and then a wonderful dinner prepared by the safari cook. The meals prepared by the cook exceeded my expectations the whole time for what would be offered on a safari.

On the third day, we had a full day to explore the Serengeti and this was our favorite day of all. We started at sunrise and headed out to a hippo pool, where we had amazing views of probably more than 50 hippopotamuses in the river and some out of the river. I thanked the safari driver for pointing out a crocodile that I would have never noticed because it blended into the rocks at the edge of the river so well. After breakfast, we headed back out for the rest of the day and were absolutely thrilled to see lions, leopards, and a cheetah all in the same day. We watched a group of about five lions climb into a sausage tree that was only about 20 from the road to rest for about one hour. After that, we drive a little further and the driver spotted a leopard resting in the tree that was quite a distance away, but it was our lucky day as the leopard got up and down from the tree and walked toward us within 15 feet of the vehicle. Later in the day, we saw our first cheetah and it was an exciting time as the cheetah was preparing to hunt. The cheetah ran out of view chasing prey, the driver was able to locate the cheetah again soon after and we saw that the hunt was not a success. On this day the Serengeti truly lived up to its reputation as being arguably the best place in the world to view wildlife. On the way back to camp, the driver even spotted and pointed out a millipede to us that was below the vehicle, and at this point I was even more impressed at the driver’s skill in spotting anything that moves as he maneuvers the vehicle across difficult terrain.

On day 4, we drove out of the Serengeti to a campground on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater in time to see the sun set over the crater. As we drove out of the Serengeti, we were lucky enough to come across a group of about 1000 zebras that were on both sides of the road we were traveling on. Once back in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area we drove past Lake Ndutu to meet up with an armed park ranger that would take us on a hike. It was interesting to see the same animals, such as impalas and zebras, that we were able to be so close to while in the vehicle run away before we were even within 100 yards. This short hike provides a different perspective and allowed up to see the land and plants up close without being in the vehicle. We made one more stop on the way to the crater rim at Olduvai Gorge, where many world famous discoveries showing the evolution of pre-human hominids have been uncovered. At this location there is a small museum and a great view of the gorge. It was incredible that a place of this significance so conveniently fit into our safari.

On the final day of the safari we did a game drive inside of the Ngorongoro Crater where such a large number of animals concentrated in a relatively small area creates great wildlife viewing opportunities. Another thing that makes the crater such a special place, is there is always a great view with 360 degrees of crater walls around you and a lake. Here we saw more lions, a cheetah and many others. The highlight of the crater was completing the Big 5 (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and rhino) as we saw numerous black rhinos, which are very difficult to find in other places. Seeing a number of rhinos up close was a great way to end our safari and from there, we headed back to Arusha with memories that will last a lifetime.

I thank Bush 2 Beach, especially Chris and the driver/guide and cook that joined us, for making our safari experience everything we hoped it would be and more. If you are looking to do a safari in Africa, I highly recommend traveling to the Serengeti National Park and work with Bush 2 Beach to plan the perfect safari for you.

They were definitely the right choice, cheaper than any other quotes we had had but by being cheaper they certainly didn’t scrimp on providing anything for us. A fantastic safari guide who knew exactly where to find the animals & not only did we get to see the wonderful big 5 we saw it about 3 times! We could stay & watch the animals for hours he never hurried us to move on to the next thing, it was all at our pace which was brilliant. A chef travelled with us & cooked the most amazing food we have ever had on holiday.

They arranged absolutely everything & all we had to do was turn up & sit back & enjoy. We booked this trip to celebrate my 40th birthday as I wanted to do something special & it certainly didn’t disappoint.

Their tented camps are absolutely amazing, I wanted to live there!

I would highly recommend Bush 2 Beach & when we do this holiday again they are our first choice…

“Calving season in the Serengeti – The Circle of Life”

After the short rains of November and December, every new year kicks off with the spectacle of the Great Wildebeest Migration in full numbers in the now-green area of South-Serengeti and Ndutu. This is calving season, where up to 80% of female wildebeest give birth and predators are never far away.

Join this spectacle with a short and very affordable safari combining two days of exploration of that other gem, Tarangire National Park with three full days among the migration in the Serengeti and a full day of game-drives in the world-renowned Ngorongoro Crater.

Using comfortable lodging in Tarangire and our special Mobile Fly-Camping setup at a private camp in Serengeti, you are as close to nature as you can possibly get.

The inclusion of a special (private) camp in the Serengeti means availability is limited but we have been able to secure a number of nights, allowing us to offer this special:

From February 9th until 14th, 2012

From February 12th until 17th, 2012

The Honemoon Trail takes you to a few of the most famous parks in the Northern circuit of Tanzania. All accommodation is in very comfortable permanent tented camps and lodges, most of them are low volume and not the big chain hotels. You’ll be having your own private safari vehicle and B2B driver during the whole trip.

In Zanzibar you’ll be staying at the Asali Suite of Matemwe Beach Village – a suite specially designed for honeymoons with your own private butler. Private dining at the veranda of your suite or in the restaurant – it’s your choice!

February 2012, the masses of the Great Migration are in the Ndutu area of the Serengeti National Park. This is your last chance to book your front-row seat!

“The Great Migration has started”

The Great Migration has started – book now to reserve some of the last accommodation in the middle of the moving masses. February is not too far away in the scheme of things and a lot of accommodation is already full. January, February and early March are prime game viewing in the Ndutu area bordering the famous Serengeti plains. This is where the action takes place with thousands upon thousands of Wildebeest massing on the open plains for breeding.

We have put together an exciting photographic safari that covers ‘The best of the Northern safari circuit’.

Visit Lake Manyara as a subtle introduction to Tanzania’s fine National Park with much resident wildlife, excellent birding and a healthy population of primates, finish off the day with song and dance and grass roots cultural experiences with an overnight stop amongst the Maasai of Esilalei. Sit back in the comforts of the tented bush camp overlooking Lake Manyara to melting sunsets.

We then take you off the beaten track following The Great Rift Valley wall through an ancient volcanic landscape to Lake Natron the breeding grounds of the lesser east African Flamingo, all in the shadows of Oldoinyo Lengai – The Mountain of the Gods. Natron allows for one to immerse in the wilderness location with relaxed walks, lake visits and the most invigorating power shower possible by visiting the series of waterfalls close by. Next stop Serengeti bound entering the very north of the eco system, one overnight stop to explore the local area then dropping into the heart of Serengeti to conduct game drives at your leisure, wildlife viewing will be extreme and the camps and lodges selected varying, comfortable and welcoming after your time spent out during game viewing.

Next but last stop is Ndutu itself, located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Already you would have come across the great migration whilst travelling through Serengeti but the biggest concentration of wildebeest will be in and around Ndutu, Lake Masek. Accommodation is limited but we do have certain nights available to date at a comfortable seasonal tented camp which will be in the centre of the action, do not miss this opportunity to be amongst it for several days roaming freely with your driver guide.

When you thought the action could not get any better we have added in an exciting private semi lux fly camp for you close to the Ngorongoro crater itself. Two nights will be spent at this private special camp location taking in the famous Ngorongoro crater in one day of full game drives of the crater floor followed by a guided crater rim walk and a seldom side trip by vehicle to visit Empakai crater. Here you will drop by foot with a NCAA ranger to the lake shore cutting through lush wild forests, Empakai being part of the ancient chain of volcanoes that make up the Crater highlands walking safari leading through to Lake Natron.

Return to Arusha with your final hours spent at the relaxing Lake Duluti before continuing through to JRO (Kilimanjaro International Airport) to connect with international flights.

Please note that commencement dates of this safari are limited due to availability of the Ndutu accommodation.

“Free your mind, body and soul as you head to the roof top of Africa…
the enormity of it all is breath-taking….”

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, reaching a height of 5,895 meters or 19,341 foot above sea level. On clear days her snow capped peaks can be seen from different vantage points from Arusha and Moshi.

For those wishing to tackle Mt Kilimanjaro’s dizzying heights there are several options open with each route having a different character; suitable in accordance to age, fitness level, prior experience as to climbing & trekking in general and at altitude, and – at the end of the day – just what you would like to experience out of your climb of Mount Kilimanjaro.

From personal experience and from those climbers who have stepped forth and tried, the overall feeling is that it is one of the hardest, most satisfying personal quest that most have attempted in their lives.

Whether reaching the summit or not, the journey that you will undertake will certainly be physical and emotional; the key to summiting Kilimanjaro being a strong positive focused mental attitude, good friends, a loved one and of course your experienced Bush2Beach Kili-Crew literally right behind you every step, shuffle, slip, slide of the way.

Getting ready to climb

Each route is described below in brief along with full day to day itineraries of how the climb will unfold; no matter which route you choose though, the aim is to succesfully make it to the roof-top of Africa. To maximize your chances, preparation is essential.

Equipment and clothing

An essential part of making it to the top is to arrive prepared, with the right clothing and medical items. To help you do this, we have put together a page listing the items to pack and pointers for a successful climb. Please contact us with any inquiries and questions concerning these; most items are also available for rent.

In the few days before commencing your climb you get to meet your guide(s) who will go through a thorough gear check and climbing safety brief at our offices or the hotel/lodge. This will allow you to ask all unanswered questions, fears and doubts before commencing the climb so that when you do actually put a toe at the park gate all uncertainty will be stored somewhere in the back of your thoughts allowing only positive feelings and a familiarization toward your guide who is going to become your best friend over the next 7 – 9 days.

It is an important factor to have trust and confidence in your guide as when the going gets tough he will be the best person to lean on (literally).

Acclimatisation

If you are considering a climb-only option then we recommend that you try and allow at least 2 days before heading up the mountain to settle in and slowly begin the acclimatization process; staying in Arusha – set at the base of Mount Meru (Tanzania’s second highest mountain at 4566m), at an altitude of around 1450 meters depending where you lay your head, allows for this.

We can also arrange an acclimatization / cultural trek in the foot hills of Mount Meru, allowing you to reach heights of close to 2000 metres and further forming a relationship with your guide who will do his upmost and foremost to deliver you safely to ‘The roof-top of Africa’, the highest free standing mountain in the world.

If you are looking to combine your climb of Mount Kilimanjaro with Tanzania’s wild-life and cultural insights during your time spent in our country we recommend that you head out on safari first as this offers several benefits.

You will slowly begin to adjust to altitude as already mentioned; by visiting the Ngorongoro Crater you reach heights of 2300 metres above sea level. In light of a request to head out on a Wildlife safari combined with a Kilimanjaro climb we will design the safari accordingly, spending a night on the Ngorongoro Crater rim and, depending on the way the itinerary works, possibly walk or trek in either direction arriving or leaving the Ngorongoro rim itself.

The Ngorongoro forest walk is fairly strenuous if heading up hill out of Karatu highlands but will put you in good step for what awaits on Kilimanjaro along with it being an exciting walk in itself with great opportunities to come across many forest dwellers, including elephant, buffalo and once reaching the higher open plains then Zebra and other plains games wildlife are common, making it a unique experience to be on ground level as opposed to the constraints of a safari vehicle.

Climbing the mountain

On the following pages you can find information in brief as to varying climbing routes that Bush 2 Beach offer – if you have any special requirements, interest and cannot find the information then please contact us direct.

5/6 day Marangu Route - The only route up the Kilimanjaro were you‘ll sleep in Mountain huts instead of tents, can be done in 5 days but we advise using an extra altitude day which can be a major factor in your summit bid becoming successful. (more …)

6/7 day Machame Route – Our most popular trek, Machame has undoubtedly pulled perhaps the more adventurous climbers away from the popular Marangu route (more …)

6/7 day Umbwe Route - A route that holds the note as being the steepest route on Kilimanjaro!! Dramatic scenery on this route for the more adventurous groups, extreme bush walker who likes a challenge (more…)

6/7 day Rongai Route -

8 day Lemosho Route - Certainly the most relaxed, scenic and uncluttered open routes that Kilimanjaro has to offer, several days again heading up through afromontane forests of the lower slopes breaking out into open vista of Shira Plateau. (more …)
