The Swahili Coast

Slow pace of life and your own little piece of paradise at the windswept beaches of the Swahili Coast of Tanzania

The Swahili Coast in Tanzania is often overlooked as visitors prefer to visit the more famous Zanzibar Island, but those who do look closer will discover Tanzania's most beautiful areas with featuring idyllic beaches, quiet Swahili towns and small fishing villages.

Many years ago the towns were important trade centres and also home to Arab slavers, Swahili merchants and German colonials.

One of the important towns was Pangani. Several historical sites in and around the town serve as reminders of the strong Arabic influence and later colonial era of German East Africa and British Tanganyika Territory. The district boma or headquarters is the most impressive building remaining from the period of Zanzibari rule.
